The Facts Well Water Homeowners Should Know

If your home is supplied with water from a private well, it could be critical to know what is flowing into your home with your water. The first step is to educate yourself on all the things that could possibly be in your water, as found on the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As reported, “private wells can be contaminated by both naturally occurring sources and by human activities.”

It is not our intention to scare you, but educate you on the importance of knowing your water quality. Illnesses, of different degrees of severity, are possible when these contaminants are in the water you are drinking, especially high levels. Depending on where your home is located, the surrounding environment may expose your drinking water to a multitude of contaminant sources.

Home Water Testing as Guided by the EPA

To better guide, the EPA’sHome Water Testing” fact sheet will help you with the process.

  • Two reasons for having your water tested whether you have a public or a private water supply.
    • Suspicion of lead
    • Considering a water treatment system.
  • Annual testing is vital to detect harmful contaminants and after replacing or repairing well and/or parts.
  • Test for nitrate months before a newborn is expected to arrive.
  • For the less harmful contaminants, test every three years unless you are experiencing “taste, odor, or staining issues.”
  • Test after nearby chemical or fuel spills or leaks.
  • Testing more than once per year may be necessary, pending water changes noticed.

Specific to New Jersey Residents: “Private Well Testing Act”

The State of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection explains the “Private Well Testing Act that requires sellers, (or buyers) of property with potable wells in New Jersey to test the untreated groundwater for a variety of water quality parameters, including up to 32 human health concern, and to review the test results prior to closing of title.”

Another regulation requires landlords with water supplied by a private well must “test their well water once every five years and to provide each tenant with a copy of the test results.” Also, there are new well construction regulations with testing to be done upon completion of the well, and then it should follow the United States and New Jersey EPA recommendations and regulations.
